MEDFORD - Speros Varinos, a recent Tufts University graduate, was announced on Wednesday as a member of the 2017 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America® Division III Baseball Team.
The best pitcher in New England this spring, Varinos is one of 35 players in the nation selected to the three Academic All-America® teams. Receiving a third team honor, Varinos is the only player from the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) on the Academic All-America® Team. He is one of five players from New England schools.
Recognizing the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom, the Academic All-America® Team is made up of student-athletes who are a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale). Earlier this month, Varinos received Academic All-District® Team honors to earn a spot on the Academic All-America® Team ballot.
From Middleton, Mass., Varinos finished 8-1 with a 1.98 ERA and 86 strikeouts with only 11 walks in 77.1 innings for the NESCAC champion Jumbos this spring. His 7.82 strikeouts-to-walks ratio ranks 14th nationally. He also has top 50 national rankings with his eight victories, 1.98 ERA and 86 K's, as well as with his 1.01 walks and hits to innings pitched ratio (WHIP).
Last week, Varinos was selected as an All-American by D3baseball.com and the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA). He was the NESCAC Pitcher of the Year and a first team selection. He was also D3baseball.com's New England Pitcher of the Year and a first team pick. The ABCA and the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) both announced Varinos as its New England Division III Pitcher of the Year and a first team all-star.
A biology major, Varinos has plans to attend dental school. In addition to his strong academics, he is also involved in the community. He volunteers with Big Brothers Big Sisters, participated in Tufts' Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and was head leader of Tufts' F.I.T. Pre-Orientation program this year.
Varinos joins softball senior Cassie Ruscz as Jumbos to receive the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Teams honor this spring.
