MEDFORD - One of the top pitchers in New England and a biology major at Tufts University, senior Speros Varinos of the Jumbo baseball team was selected to the 2016-17 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District® Team announced on Thursday.
Recognizing the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom, the Academic All-District™ teams are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. To be nominated, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at their current institution.
From Middleton, Mass., Varinos is one of 11 players selected to the Division III team in District I, which represents schools in Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. He is one of just three New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) players on the team.
This season Varinos has won all eight of his starts for head coach John Casey's Jumbos. In 57 total innings, he has recorded a 1.58 ERA with 64 strikeouts and just nine walks. He leads NESCAC in wins (8), innings (57), strikeouts (64) and ERA (1.58).
He was a D3baseball.com preseason All-American second team pick this spring after earning 2016 NESCAC Pitcher of the Year honors. He was also D3baseball's New England Pitcher of the Year and a D3baseball third team All-American in 2016. He pitched in the Cape Cod League last summer.
In addition to his strong academics, Varinos is also involved in the community. He volunteers with Big Brothers Big Sisters, participates in Tufts' Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and was head leader of Tufts' F.I.T. Pre-Orientation program this year.
Led in part by the tri-captain Varinos' performance on the hill, the Jumbos are 25-6-1 overall and won the NESCAC East Division pennant for the fourth consecutive season. Tufts will play in the conference championship at Colby College May 12-14.
First-team Academic All-District™ honorees advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Team ballot, where first-, second- and third teamAll-America® honorees will be selected later this month.
