Varinos' Post-Season Awards Haul Continues with ABCA Second Team All-America Recognition

MEDFORD - Adding to a post-season full of awards, senior tri-captain Speros Varinos of the Tufts University baseball team was recognized as an American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) / Rawlings Second Team All-American on Thursday night.

Varinos has been on every post-season team announced over the last few weeks. He was the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Pitcher of the Year and a first team selection. He was also's New England Pitcher of the Year and a first team pick. The ABCA and the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) both announced Varinos as its New England Division III Pitcher of the Year and a first team all-star. And now the ABCA joins D3baseball in naming Varinos as an All-American.

Additionally, back in January D3baseball included Varinos on its Preseason All-America Team. Their projection was spot-on as Varinos finished 8-1 with a 1.98 ERA and 86 strikeouts with only 11 walks in 77.1 innings for the NESCAC champion Jumbos.

This is the second straight year that Varinos has earned a haul of post-season awards. In 2016 he was a D3baseball third team All-American as well as the organization's New England Pitcher of the Year and on the All-New England first team. He was also the NESCAC Pitcher of the Year and All-Conference first team in his junior season. The ABCA and NEIBA both had him on their All-New England first teams last year.

Varinos started at second base for the Jumbos in the first game of his freshman season back in 2014. However, he soon started pitching full-time and spent his freshman and sophomore seasons in the bullpen before becoming the team's ace. For his career, he went 18-2 with a 2.53 ERA and 216 strikeouts with only 25 walks in 188.2 innings pitched. His .900 winning percentage is tops in Tufts history.

Head coach John Casey's Jumbos won the NESCAC East pennant for the fourth straight season and went on to take their second straight conference championship in 2017. Tufts was the only NESCAC team to receive an NCAA berth and finshed the season with a 30-10-1 record.
