MEDFORD - The New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) and New England Division III Pitcher of the Year this spring, senior Speros Varinos of the Tufts University baseball team has been named to the D3baseball.com All-America third team.
Varinos is one of just four players in New England selected to D3baseball's four All-America teams (including an honorable mention). He is the only pitcher from the region to receive All-America recognition from the website. This is his second straight season on the D3baseball All-America third team.
This spring, Varinos finished 8-1 with a save and a 1.98 ERA. He allowed just 17 earned runs in 77.1 innings while striking out 86 batters and walking only 11. His 7.82 strikeouts-to-walks ratio ranks 14th nationally. He also has top 50 national rankings with his eight victories, 1.98 ERA and 86 K's, as well as with his 1.01 walks and hits to innings pitched ratio (WHIP).
With Varinos as the ace of its staff, Tufts posted some of the top pitching numbers in Division III. The Jumbos' 2.94 strikeouts to walks ratio is 13th nationally, as is their 1.23 WHIP. The team 3.18 ERA is 18th in Division III, while the Jumbos' 8.41 hits per nine innings pitched mark is 21st and their 2.68 walks per nine innings pitch is 22nd.
In his two All-American seasons (2016-17), Varinos combined to go 15-2 with a 2.06 ERA and 165 strikeouts against 33 walks in 144.1 innings pitched.
Head coach John Casey's Jumbos won the NESCAC East pennant for the fourth straight season and went on to take their second straight conference championship in 2017. Tufts was the only NESCAC team to receive an NCAA berth and finshed the season with a 30-10-1 record.
