BASEBALL'S SAM SAGER SIGNS CAPE COD LEAGUE CONTRACT WITH HARWICH MARINERS
MEDFORD - Jumbo baseball's Sam Sager, who recently completed his
junior year at Tufts University, has signed to play with the
Harwich Mariners of the Cape Cod League this summer.
Sager started all 37 games at third base for Coach John Casey's Jumbos in 2011. The team posted a 27-9-1 record, won their second straight New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) title and earned the #1 seed for the NCAA New England Regional Tournament. He hit .333 with 12 doubles, a team-high 33 rbi and 33 runs scored. He also worked 27 walks and finished with a .458 on-base percentage. Sager fielded .956 with just five errors in 114 chances, including just one error in the final 18 games.
Celebrating its 114th year, the Cape League is recognized as the best amateur summer league in the country by college coaches, as well as professional baseball scouts. Players from around the USA and all college divisions are recruited to play in the ten-team loop.
Former Jumbo Randy Newsom pitched in the Cape League a few years back. He went on to sign a professional contract with the Boston Red Sox.
