BERNSTEIN TABBED AS NEW ENGLAND PITCHER OF THE YEAR BY NEIBA IN RELEASE OF ALL-NEW ENGLAND TEAMS

MEDFORD - New England Pitcher of the Year Ed Bernstein (Foxborough, MA) of the Tufts baseball team leads four Jumbos who were honored when the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) released it's 2011 All-New England Division III Teams on Wednesday.
Bernstein and senior CF David Orlowitz (Wakefield, MA) are on the NEIBA All-New England First Team. Coach John Casey's Jumbos joined Western New England, Keene State and Eastern Connecticut as New England teams with two players on the First Team. Tufts junior catcher Matt Collins (Hopkinton, MA0 is on the Second Team and junior starter Kevin Gilchrist (Medford, MA) is a Third Teamer.
Bernstein, who was announced as the NESCAC Pitcher of the Year on Wednesday, followed that up by earning the NEIBA's Pitcher of the Year honor. The Jumbos' closer has not allowed an earned run in 29 innings this season, and has recorded nine saves. After saving today's NCAA Regional win over MIT with a 1-2-3 ninth, Bernstein has allowed just a .103 batting average against. His nine saves are tied for the most in the region.
Bernstein is the second straight Tufts closer to win NEIBA Pitcher of the Year. Last spring, Chris DeGoti shared Pitcher of the Year honors with Wheaton College sophomore Nolan Corr.
Orlowitz has blossomed into an all-star this spring, hitting .396 with nine doubles, four home runs, 11 stolen bases, 39 runs scored and 25 rbi. His extraordinary range in center field has led to 88 put outs.
Collins combines offense and defense to rank as one of the best catchers in New England. The NESCAC Defensive Player of the Year, he has a .994 fielding percentage to go with a .343 batting average, 11 doubles, three home runs, 18 runs and 21 rbi. Gilchrist was the team's top-of-the-rotation starter throughout the regular season, recording a 5-2 record with a 1.99 earned run average and just 13 walks in 54.1 innings.
